Frugal, thrifty and alternative uses for
MILK AND MILK CARTONS
Using products you have around the home for other jobs
Milk
1. Cleaning Leather
Dab a little milk on to some soft cloth and rub into your Leather Shoes or Handbags etc. This will help to restore and soften them.
2. After Sun
We've all seen products such as 'Sun Milk' and so on and this is exactly what ordinary plain Milk can do - relieve you of Sunburn after the event. For this it is best to use powdered milk and mix it with a tiny amount of salt
3. As a hand tonic
It is said that Cleopatra bathed in milk and indeed, some people do now, but as that requires having half a bath of milk poured in, it may be slightly frugally excessive! However, by gently rubbing in plain milk into your hands three times a day, your skin will become nicely toned after a few weeks.
4. Ink Stain Remover
Milk is a far better substance to use than plain water. Put some milk in a bowl and soak the affected part of clothing in it overnight, then wash as normal.
Milk Cartons
1. Mini Greenhouse
Cut off the base of the Milk carton and place on the soil over newly sprouted plants. This will not only protect them from birds but will promote good growth through the extra warmth. Leave the top off for ventilation.
2 Feed Scoop
I pinched this idea from a person on the Down the Lane Forum. Simply cut the appropriate shape out of the can and use it to scoop up Chicken Feed or anything else. See top picture right.
3. Propagating
Cutting a Milk Carton in half and covering seeds you may have sown on a window Cill will give them a head start and form a condensation promoting healthy growing.
4. Paint Brush / White Spirit Holder.
Cut the top off the Carton and use the lower half to clean your Paint Brushes in White Spirit, then dispose when it's seen it's best days. Leaving the handle part in tact, you can also use it as a handy paint holder for doing those fiddly bits without carrying a huge can of paint around with you..
5, . Kids Games
Just save ten empty Cartons and they can play 10 Pin Bowling. Paint them for extra fun if you wish.
