Looking around my garden this evening I had to remind myself of the time of year. I wandered out to a slightly chilled evening and strolled around the Garden.
It was then I noticed how many leaves there were on the ground from the Laurel, how brown and red the Virginia Creeper has got and numerous other signs which if I’d been asleep for a long time, I’d have awoken and guessed late August, early September.

Even the vegetables seem to be maturing quickly. It must be the earliest we’ve had so many red tomatoes and the Carrots are begging to be pulled.

So it seems another year of weather anomolies. This year they are telling us that early vegetable crops are expected due to the unusually warm Spring followed by a warm and dry Summer (here in Kent anyway).

It seems it’s the annual record this and record that, the warmest, the dryest, the hottest, the coldest, the wettest and so it goes on.
Surely there can no longer be those who say these things are natural ? I for one take into account our Mother Earth is millions of years old and has gone through various climate changes, but the past ten or twenty years seems to have excelled itself.

A slightly similar thing happened on Sunday when I walked down the side of the field to find my ‘secret stash’ of Horseradish tall and glowing. Normally I would dig the roots up in late August, but I feel it could be a few weeks earlier this year.

Not long now before the Gardeners Books are revised to match our changing Seasons, or maybe there will be one with ‘Plant out in April if……., in May if……. and June if……!!

As you are probably aware from my previous entry, I’m not too keen on hot days in the garden and being launched upon by every bug and insect known to man. Late August through to the end of October suits me well, lots to do and enjoy the colours.
But now, I start to wonder if it’ll be late July to the end of September.

Who knows what’s in store for our Children and theirs, but each generation must have the awareness that we are merely custodians and passing through in a very short space of time. Surely we have a responsibility to them?

Some people don’t care what they’re leaving behind, but would we thank our Grandfathers if they had treated this planet the way we do sometimes.

Add to this the fall in Organic produce and Free Range Poultry etc. because people can’t afford the extra with the Credit Crunch and we have yet another downward trend.

I hope they don’t pay the cost for some 50 or so years of madness.
