My house is on the edge of the Broadband limits; both BT and my ISP said I should be getting speeds of 1500kpbs, but as much as I fiddled or tweaked settings etc., I never achieved more than around 875kpbs.
The slow speeds affected my uploading and editing of this website and when I was in the mood, spoilt any video clips because of jerking and generally cutting out.
I frequently called my ISP to discuss this, obviously running a Website along with the uploading, downloading and editing I do, it was all painfully annoying.
Every time time I got the same list of things to check through; cables, interference, spyware etc.
To be honest, I gave up and resigned myself to never getting the speed I should.

Then one day about three months ago a friend told me to look into an item called BT iFilter. He reckoned it had done wonders to his connection and it was worth every penny of the £8 price.

I had a look at it, saw I had the right kind of socket, oredered it, got it the next day, fixed it up in less than a minute and immediately after got broadband speeds of 1350kpbs and it’s stayed like that ever since !

So, what is it ? It’s a replacement front plate for your phone socket (note – only the type illustrated below – if it hasn’t ‘BT’ on it – it won’t work). It cuts out electrical interference around the Modem / Router and cables.

I have to say I was amazed that just one TV, Digibox Storage Heater in the same room as the Modem would make that much difference, even when they are turned off I got the same slow speeds.
But, it could be said that interference from the Fridge, Microwave and other Kitchen Appliances could also be to blame.

You simply unscrew the old plate, screw the new one in, plug the socket (with the filter) back in and that’s it.

There are many things which can cause slow internet broadband speeds, the most common being spyware or cookies which have built up in your Temporary Internet Files. These can be easily cleaned by going to ‘Tools’ on Firefox, Internet Explorer or others. But, it would seem from my experience, that the answer is often more outside your Computer than in !
