Re: Dead hen (do not read if squeamish/eating)
Hi, I had the same problem a few weeks ago, let the chickens out in the paddock and went outside an hour later to catch one of the girls running round with what looked like baling twine in her mouth trying to swallow it, when i went to take it off her I found it was not twine but her own insides whi...

home grown treat for the girls
Hi, I have spent all summer growing some corn on the cob plants, put them in a container and they have grown but not very big, when I came to pick the corns, they were just full of earwigs, also the dog seems to have taken a fancy to the container to mark his territory!!! Didnt fancy eating them aft...

Re: New to the Forum - need advice
Hi, welcome, it is very unlikely that you will need a heater in your coop, as long as the girls are dry, clean and out of the drafts then they will cuddle together with their feather duvets. Heat tends to be more of a problem than cold

Re: hanging chicken feeders
I think i read somewhere to hang them the height of the chickens back but i dont think it really matters as long as they can reach the food easily but not able to stand in them

Re: Day 16
I remember my first hatching I was up and down out of bed every 10mins was so excited, my OH got very cross and I wasnt allowed to do it the 2nd time, I got really worried when I could see the beak poking through but nothing else happened for hours. I am lucky that I have my own cockeral who seems t...

Re: Chicken Hotel
Hi, i mentioned last year about opening a chicken hotel (they must have been reading this forum), however was put off by the replies I got (nothing nasty) but it brought up the issue of disease control, with many chickens coming and going I got the jitters about passing on illnesses to my charges, b...

Do you think it will be safe
I have a cockeral George in a pen on his own because him and Ted fight, they are both big boys and could do some damage, however I have the babies in a coop with a run in his pen so that they can see him and visa versa, when they are old enough do you think it will be safe to let them out with him o...

Re: plants in chicken run
I have a plum tree in mine, and a hawthorn bush, provides great shelter and a prickly place to run under when I want to catch them or need them to go into the smaller run, where they can stand and watch me getting tangled in the thorns (they love that)

Re: Chickens for eating
Hi, I have recently hatched chicks from my cream legbar cockeral and black rock girls, I intend to keep the hens if I have any and keep the cockerals for eating, I know that they wont be big strapping things like the broilers and will probably cost more than the shop puchased ones, however there sho...
