Off Grid Living
Hi, i'm not sure if this is the right 'section' of the forum but i have a question about off grid living. I was wondering how easy it would be to do ? For eg, if i have an acre of land, could i plonk a static on it and live in it ??? Im not necessarily bothered about the logistics of power / water /...

Re: Run Flooring
Hi, my run has a full wire roof and a dirt floor and that seems to work well. It is a full wire run with tarpauline on three sides to afford protection from the wind and i have built a big shelter for the chucks so they can hide if the weather gets too bad. In the winter i put straw down to help pro...

Re: I've botched up the introduction of a new girl!! HELP!!
Watching chucks sort the pecking order is very stressful for all but ive often thought its worse for us parents. Chickens are very tough and harmony will prevail soon enough. Ive found that chickens go into 'monging out mode' once in the coop at night and found they seem perfectly happy snuggled in ...

Re: coop maintenance
Hi all, thanks for the view. It is creosote and works very well so I think I shall re-creosote the coop when it gets a bit warmer so I can shut it down for a few weeks for it to 'air' before I re-introduce the chucks. I don't know about anyone else but I find DE very hard to use right as it has to b...

coop maintenance
Hi all, just a quick question about red mite. We have a wooden coop and we creosoted it last year. The mite didn't stand a chance and it worked brilliantly. Some people say it needs doing every year others say I never have to do it again. Does anyone have a definitive answer.
Cheers

Re: To all newbie or about to be Chicken Keepers...
Here's one then. I've been on this site ever since i got chickens almost 4 years ago and its been invaluable. We have had pure breeds but also rescue chickens too, we are due to get another 10 ex-batts on 10th March. I was telling a friend of mine this and she said that as chickens get older the egg...

Re: Anniversary for Bluebell
We had 2 bluebells but sadly they are no longer with us. They are a gorgeous breed aren't they. Ours never became tame, they seemed very happy ignoring us and simply going about their business.

Lellie you sound nuts......welcome I have been to the vets many times with our chucks but i am always told that chickens are almost impossible to treat. They are wild birds so hide illness well so you don't always know they are ill until its too late, also our vet says that a vein can rarely be foun...

Re: At last I shall uncover my Chicken Coop !!
Loving the set up especially the feeding gutter...genius idea Just a quick Q. seeing as though foxes have been mentioned. I have been told, and have read that male urine deters foxes so i tend to pee on my compost heap which is directly behind the coop/run and its also good for the compost heap. Doe...

Re: She was trying to wake up a dead hen...
We have lost hens in the past and certain ones seemed to 'mourn' if that is the right word. I found this strange initially because they use to peck the bejesus out of each other in the day when affirming their pecking order. Beautiful and complex which is why i think we love them eh.

Re: It's very quiet - are your chooks wintering well ?
I relax a little more in winter, ours seem to do ok. I think as long as they have good food, plenty of water and other warm bodies to cosy up to then they will be ok for the harshest British winter. We have already started to get more eggs, granted only 4 a week from 5 birds but they are all getting...

Re: Araucana, opinions please
I wonder if they are better in groups of their own kind ?? Perhaps if I was to get 3 and get them use to each other before I even start to introduce them to the other 5 girls ??
