Re: Using the greenhouse border in winter
Definitely out of beak range Mo, they are on quite high up shelves. But all a bit moot, as they are wilting in their pots - perhaps too chilly already for lettuces
toms and cuces have all been cleared now.

Re: Avian flu 2022-23
I suspect the real worry is it jumping species, especially given our experience with the coronavirus - it does feel like the current strains of avian flu could be particularly deadly if they jump. The devastation to the wild bird population, especially sea birds whose populations are struggling anyw...

Re: Using the greenhouse border in winter
I’m tempted to try lettuce in there - I’ve still got tomatoes & cucumbers in for now - but it becomes the chickens’ Winter Palace so the lettuce wouldn’t make it! I do have some lettuce in pots (out of beak reach) so this’ll be an interesting experiment

Re: karen's chicken diary
Another sad post - we lost Pokey on Tuesday {cry} I knew she was ill and had been out of sorts all year since her last moult (she never really recovered full vigour) but went rapidly downhill this last week. Luckily she was enjoying life and had good quality of life pretty much right till the end, j...

Re: karen's chicken diary
Gosh it has been well over a year since I updated my diary! The sad news of course that we lost Dory and Coco last year, and with the long avian flu lockdown didn’t get new girls until recently. Very upsetting to lose both girls but especially Dory, and things just haven’t been the same without her....

Re: Karen's 2015 garden diary
I'm late with my diary this year, but I am well ahead on the allotment prep - everything is all ready and I am well pleased with it! All dug over, and it wasn't too hard either compared to previous years, not too many weeds really, although the bindweed is loving this wet spell. We put up a new gaze...

Re: Louise's Chicken Diary
There's no way to avoid heartache and pain if you are living your life CC. If you are thinking of giving up chicken keeping, don't let it be because of times like this - you might protect yourself from pain but you'll miss so much joy along the way. I look forward to finding out what you decide to d...

So sorry to hear the sad news about Violet
It is always difficult to lose one of our girls but some snuggle into our hearts so deep that to lose them is especially heart-wrending. I hope happy memories of Violet will comfort you

Re: Feather Eating
Dory Grey will eat feathers, and Pokey too, but only when they are moulting and they don't feather peck, they hoover up the ones that have been shed, so there's definitely an extra protein hit needed at moult time and perhaps just generally through the winter months. I noticed it when Ronnie was aro...

Hey Bob, good to hear you & the flock are doing well! About your little house hen, if it's not a neurological condition, it could be something as simple as a protein or a vitamin B deficiency (commonly called stargazing or wry neck). My Ronnie had a protein deficiency when she arrived at ours, she w...

Ah bless Agnes, she has finally decided that camping out isn't for her! Come spring she'll be back out there again, under the stars...
It's so good to hear Voilet is still pottering about, pecking everyone and generally chickening. How old is she now Louise?
