Re: Mirrors in the run?
We have CD's in our run and the girls have taken no notice of them whatsoever. After all, they're not edible are they

Re: Friend had a vist from fox
I was so sorry and sad to hear your story, and it seems there are lots of fox stories around at the moment. Time of year for young foxes I think. I am so worried about my girls being attacked even though they are in a mega secure run (not allowed in the garden) and we have even secured the doors to ...

Re: Suppliments?
Poultry spice is excellent and can be added to their mash no problem. Even when you ween them off mash and onto pellets the odd bowl of mash with poultry spice will go down a treat. We also add Battles poultry drink to their water occasionaly (pink stuff). They seem to really like that too and I und...

Re: Verm- ex or Flubenvet ?
I have used verm-x as a preventative measure and then Flubenvet as an actual worm killer. On the instructions it does say that no egg withdrawal is necessary so we ate the eggs still - tasted yummy too

Re: ARE YEW TREES POISONOUS TO CHICKENS?
As far as I am aware it is not allowed (maybe illegal) to put livestock (i.e sheep and cows) knowingly in a field where Yew is present. It also poisonous to horses. As for chooks, not recommended, but I think they are much wiser than we think and will not eat anything that is harmful , but i wouldn'...

Re: Soft Egg Shells
Make sure they are eating plenty of pellets which contain all the nutrients they need to lay good eggs. If you give them treats then save them till the afternoon. They will take any grit and oyster shell as and when they need it, so make sure it is available to them all the time. If necessary, cut o...

Re: First night!!
Never used vaseline on their legs - not sure why I would have to? They don't have to perch but if they sleep in the nest boxes and then lay in there you can get poo covered eggs (yuk). I would let them settle for a week or so and see what they end up doing. If they perch then they are happy with the...

Re: A few questions from a newbie
I use a dettol spray in all the corners, in the pull out tray underneath, the nest boxes and on the perches and then I put Diatom on the end of the perches and in all the nooks and cranies.

Re: Is she sick?
Is she laying yet? All my Point-of-Lay girls had the sneezes and coughs before they started laying and their behaviour changed. They were quieter and looked a bit fed up. In fact their squawking and coughing was a cause for concern for a while. However once they started to lay they seemed to 'mature...

Re: Does wind scare chooks?
Mine got spooked by the wind yesterday but it was only for a few seconds. A bit of loud clucking and some very alert looking chooks and then they went back to normal. They don't like drafts, gets under their feathers, so make sure you have no drafts in their living quarters (make sure they have vent...

Re: How long does Diatom and Stalosan last?
Hi, sorry to hijack this thread a bit, but I have Diatom (a massive tub full as I saw it recommended so much on this site). I have sprinkled it around the coop but it makes everything so dusty. As I have made such an effort to buy dust free bedding material, am I not defeating the object?? I know th...

Re: Plant harmless to chickens
Chooks seem to be instinctively aware of what they can and cannot eat, but to be on the safe side check any plant for details on whether it is poisonous if ingested (i.e. Ivy). You should also avoid plants with berries, just in case. You can get some good fast growing climbers, some deciduous and so...

Re: cabbage addiction
Blimey, your cabbage lasted longer that a few minutes
My girls normally demolish a large cabbage within about half an hour (there are 5 of them), it looks like they haven't been fed for a week and they turn into vultures....They haven't turned their noses up at anything yet !!

Re: Worms or what?
Verm-ex won't touch worms it will only prevent them. Use Flubenvet to actually get rid of the worms. If your girl is already showing signs of being poorly, I would recommend you get her to the vet, chickens are flock birds and will normally only look really unwell, when they are really unwell. Good ...
