Re: What % of your veg is 'home grown'?

Mo
And when you climb precariously up you find that the birds had been there first!

If there are any that are half eaten, I feed mine to the hens; they seem to love and odd apple or two, and gives them something to peck at for a few hours.:-D

Re: When to lift potatoes ?

I don't grow main crop potatoes - they grow them in abundance in scotland and are cheap enough in the shops. Nice thing about potatoes is that if you grow enough of them, it is easy enough just to lift a plant at a time. I lift one off mine about a month ago and although it had enough little potatoe...

Runner bean question

A daft question from a novice:-D I am growing my runner beans up bamboo canes set as tripods. As far as I can see they are doing really well, with lots of red flowers. But, they are now at the tops of the canes, about 5.1/2 feet; should I pinch out the tops or just leave them?

I think I am obsessed with Apples

I just love the variety and even the science of apples! I only have one apple tree in my garden at the minute, but I am taking some useless poplars down at the bottom of the garden, and want to create a small orchard of about 10 to 12 trees. I am thinking of buying bare-root tree in the autumn, but ...

Re: What % of your veg is 'home grown'?

I forgot about my apple tree; I do only have one at the moment. I am not sure what variety it is but it is very prolific. It gives us large greenish apples at the back end of August through to September, which we use as cooking apples. If I leave them on the tree, they turn redder and become sweeter...

What % of your veg is 'home grown'?

I guess a lot of us here are keen amateurs, who enjoy pottering aroung in the garden, keeping a few hens, etc? But how much does this really amount to? With 4 hens, we are mainly self-sufficient in eggs, though I do have to buy a few free-range eggs, especially during in the winter. But, although I ...

Re: Run out of layers pellets......

I am sure that they will survive for a few days on anythings you feed them, including scraps.
My mother tells me that after the last war, lots of people kept back yard chickens. They didn't have layers pellets then and just feed them table scraps (waste not, want not) and a they still got eggs.

Re: What to plant?

Hi and welcome. A 5 year wait! You must be over the moon. We are so lucky to have our own very large garden.
The best bit will be when you make your first harvest and take it home for your first home grown meal.
Good luck

Gulab jamun is a very popular desert in India and other parts of Asia. The syrup is made with rose water. And, in fact, gulab is the Persian word for rose.

Re: What do you do with your courgettes?

Mad Chick - love the idea of courgette muffins; we'll give them a try.
I also had a quick search for courgette chuckney on the web and found a few interesting recipes. I might give one of those a try. And, with the weather set fair for today, the courgettes should be coming on nicely now.

What do you do with your courgettes?

I picked our first courgette today. Like last year, this years crop looks like it is going to be good. Any exciting new ideas for cooking them? I am thinking of trying a courgette and chickpea curry. I can't recall ever having courgette curry in India but do get a lot of lady's fingers, which I gues...
