Rather than throwing away fruit & veg now you can buy boxes of 'clearance' assorted fruit & veg. Money Saving Expert tried one and priced the items in a £2 box at £8.
Aldi does something similar.
I think I prefer co-op's system of orange stickers on individual items. Last night I got a £2 pack of cherries for 70p. Without having to buy anything I wouldn't use. Not that I would usually buy cherries at this time of year.

I prefer the orange stickers because you can decide whether you want it or not. When you have an assortment of fruit & veg which is already close to its use by date, and there are some things you don't like (and wouldn't normally buy), then surely it will end up as food waste anyway (unless you know someone to offload on to)?
My local Co-op is a bit pricey for a big shop but handy for popping in for some things. Occasionally I do find a better than expected bargain and remember picking up some baby corn, mangetout and green beans for a fraction I would have expected (which was handy at the time as I was trying out my spicy recipes) However, when I saw that they had come from overseas (South America, Africa and Mediterranean) which shouldn't have surprised me considering it was in December, I wasn't happy as it goes against my usual "buy local or in season" (as in, carbon footprint)

Yes, I bought the out of season cherries (from Chile) as they were cheap and to save them from being wasted. But regretted it - utterly tasteless. I hardly buy any apples; once mine are past there best the supermarket brands just don't compare so it's stewed fruit from the freezer.
Not sure how the carbon footprint of freezing compares with importing.

I agree that the local co-op is pricey. But I like their Organic cheese (mature cheddar). And the bread is nicer than some. I get virtual coupons on my loyalty card. Every Monday I can chose 2 from about 6. I've noticed that now, although the Heinz or Tate & Lyle coupons are still 50p the own brand offers are down from 25p or 50p to 20p or 40p. I hope this means that thy kept the price increase down a bit. all a game that they play to make you spend and I play to beat them.
