When is sweetcorn ready?

Post by albertajune »

A friend gave me 2 sweetcorn plants in the spring but as yet no sign of the silky tassels appearing on either mine or hers. Should they be showing some sign of the corn by now?

There are some in the fields around us, June and they have no tassels as yet. Other than what I have seen I don not really know.

Mine have got tassels on and the cobs are developing. Possibly 2 plants wasn't enough to pollinate - you have to plant sweetcorn in close rows so the pollen can fall onto the plants from its neighbour. If they aren't next to each other they may also have struggled to pollinate. I'm assuming they're getting enough water? Are they tall ie about waist height or maybe taller by now?

These were unplanned and given by a neighbour who had too many. They are very tall, about 4ft, are right next to each other and are getting plenty of water. It was my thought that they had not been pollinated. Never mind they are nice looking plants.

I had two lovely cobs from one of the three plants I have, the other one has gone brown and no cobs have grown the other has small cobs so leaving for awhile had lots of silk from the good ones. All the plants are about 7ft tall

Well my sweetcorn suddenly turned brownyike* nothing would bring them back so i dug them out(wow those roots were tough to remove) and gave these big brown triffid looking plants to the girls who throughly enjoyed what corn there was and the many woodlice among the folds.
