I was eating my packed lunch at a Singing day yesterday and put the peel from my Easy-peeler orange into my empty polystyrene tea cup.
When we went back in I tipped the peel into the bin and filled the cup with warm water.
The result had a surprisingly pleasant orange flavour.
Now I'm wondering if this could be the start of a new drink. Has anyone tried it. What could I do with my orange peel to keep the flavour for future use? Maybe infuse a peel in boiling water then freeze as ice cubes to be diluted as needed. Would drying the peel work, if so how?

Re: New invention??? orange peel tea
Hi Mo thats is a great idea we eat loads of oranges and clementines? sp I think both ideas could work im going to try infusing in boiling water.
With drying the peel I would think it will air dry quite quickly but it wouldn't hurt to have a go of each.
I wonder if drying slow in the oven would work
I drink fruit teas regularly so I'm looking forward to trying this idea thanks for posting it.

Re: New invention??? orange peel tea
The orange flavour is in the oils so perhaps drying in an oven is not such a good idea as the light oils will vapourise off, and over time, even air dried peel will have less oil.
Limoncino is made by infusing lemon peel in an alcohol such as vodka (for anyone who doesn't know what to do with the peel when using lemons!) and after storing in a dark cupboard for a few weeks, add sugar to make it a syrup ... no reason why it wouldn't work with orange peel but then you would end up with a boozy tea.
Alternatively preserving peel in sugar should help to retain some oils (even the sugar should also have some flavour too)

I hadn't intended to flavour the water, just wanted
a) somewhere to put my peel
b) some warm water to sip

Re: New invention??? orange peel tea
This is how we preserve orange/lemon/lime zest:
Wash, rinse and dry the citrus fruit then grate.
Scoop up the grated zest with a teaspoon and place on wax paper.
Place in the freezer for about an hour.
Put the teaspoons of zest in an airtight container and place in the freezer.
When you need citrus zest for a recipe or infusion drink take a few cubes and use accordingly.
Not sure if this helps but this method allows us to have "fresh" citrus flavours all year round.

Well Trev's advice came in useful. I couldn't be bothered with the grating so just break up the peel into lumps and lay it flat in a plastic bag in the freezer box of fridge.
At the weekend I was running out of milk and didn't want to defrost a 4 pint, - I was running out because I'd defrosted some just before I was due a delivery then didn't use the delivered milk before it went sour, so didn't want to repeat that.
So it was Orange Tea instead of 2nd mugs on Sat, Orange tea on Sun when milk finally ran out.
You can fish the peel out of the mug if you are fussy, or leave it floating.
