LSGD - Bulgarian Karakachan

Post by Trev62 »

For the first time today we let our LSGD mingle freely with some young turkeys (@12 weeks old) to test her reactions when not on the leash with one of us close by.
She did well with no bad reactions even when she was pecked a few times, long way to go yet but a promising start. Next test in a few weeks will be the geese with Derrick our gander and his girls, they have crossed swords a few times in the past when she thought Derrick was going to attack us (just the usual gander bravado!) and she switched into protection mode, she has learnt since then so fingers crossed all goes well.

Would never have guessed that
For a start I would have thought livestock was all one word. But a live dog must be a better guardian than a dead dog.

At the risk of boring you (again):-D
In Western countries these dogs are often refered to as LGD'S using livestock as one word but.....I do not live in a Western country so often forget our terminology is different.
I offer my sincere and humble apologies for inadvertently misleading you and promise to try and avoid doing it again (until next time anyway!!))t'

Medium sized but solid, also extremely strong willed/stubborn. She is proving to be the most challenging dog I have owned and even harder to work with than our previous Turkish Kangal who was three times her size.

So our (hopefully) livestock protector has passed another stage, happily mixing with the geese and ducks and not even reacting when Derrick the gander had a tug at her tail. She is fine with the large turkeys and happily rounds up the younger birds if they stray to far from their Mums. Next up tomorrow, the newly hatched birds, we will see if she will sit and watch over some three/four day old chicks and ducklings outside in the field. She is okay when they have been in a pen and confined but these will be loose so strict supervision required.

Good day today (sounds a bit Australian) as our LSGD took another step forward watching over our young turkey poults as well as Mum and her ducklings. Unsupervised but restricted to our inside area she happily wandered with them even picking a couple up to return them back to where they should be and ignoring Mum who did protest rather loudly!
