The Town Centre
Now home to many a charity shop,
The small, town center.
Resembling a retail desert.
Shops lay empty.
The department stores mostly gone.
Forlorn and sad,
They have closed down,
Victims of the out of town.
Huge retail parks, not welcoming,
But prospering with their large car parks.
Now more convenient for the weekly shop,
Promising lower prices,
With greater choice and loyalty schemes,
Than any small shop.
When it is windy in the small town center,
Litter in a vortex swirls,
Adding to the feeling of desolation.
The forlorn and sad feeling,
Of a retail desert.
Mike

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

Re: Anyone write poetry?
Hi folks, not been on site for a long time. I’m pleased to say that the anthology I did for the orphanage in Bulgaria raised a few pound. The money went towards the children so they could go on a holiday to the black sea coast. By all accounts, they had a great time.
Here’s another follow up to one of Marriott Edgar poems.
John
SAM SMALL OF MONOLOGUE FAME
Apologies to Marriott Edgar and this poem ‘Old Sam’
You’ve ‘ear of Sam Small, of Monologue fame
Who wouldn’t pick up his musket, till Duke ‘ad came
‘E then went to battle, against Napoleon’s crew
T’ show ‘em just what, a Yorkshire man could do
It were twenty to one, on Napoleon’s side
But Sam wasn’t bother, he'd soon turn the tide
‘E gave them old frogies such a terrible time
They all set off home, to sup up their wine
Duke Wellington was pleased, and to Sam he said,
“You’ve done well today lad, so go off to bed,
And then in morning, wi’ all lads on parade.
I’ll give thee a medal for making my day.
And far in the future they’ll all know thee name
When they talk of Sam Small, of monologue fame.”

I thought we had a new blogger when I saw Silky's name, but quickly realised it was a very old post.
When each of my dogs died, I wrote poetry, the grief seemed to open up my creativity.

I think I've posted my cat poem before
Old Familiar Places
I tread on the second step
As curled on the first is
No cat
With refilled cup I sit with care
For on my warmed seat is
No cat
By the bedroom the carpet is scratched
But the door is shut, our sleep is disturbed by
No cat
Beside me when I dig
Or asleep on a pile of warm grass
No cat
In the lane at night*
White feet silent, grey back invisible
Not even the ghost of a cat
Socks used to go with me to post letters. In the dark all I could see was 4 white feet. Not a 'headless horsemen' but a bodyless cat
