All Creatures Great and Small

Post by Spreckly »

I was hugely disappointed with the last series of the new play. I grew up dosing myself with the original cast, and still watch re-runs!
However, I am watching ACGS, which I think ends tomorrow. The acting is superb, and despite reservations about some of the characters, must give a shout to Mrs Hall, and Mrs Pumphrey, Samuel West and the actor playing James (can't remember his name).
There have been one or two things which I felt were not period, eg the plastic coated wire cat basket in one scene, but the sets are beautiful.
My husband used the vets when he moved to North Yorkshire some thirty odd years ago, and Alf White's son was his vet.

It is very jarring when period details are wrong.
I was reading a book that dodged between wartime, +before and later. The woman was walking through a field containing big bales of hay - hang on, she's still not married so it must be prewar. Big bales???? Even small bales might have been new-fangled back then, I could have believed stooks. Really confusing.

I stooked at my aunt's farm in the fifties and sixties.

We went to Ireland for our honeymoon in'68. Lots of hay in heaps in the fields, also piles of seaweed. And being towed on flat trailed mini haystacks. Back for our silver wedding. Bales then. By our Ruby there was a grand mixture, big bales, small bales but still odd corners of land with little stacks.
Three different currencies too. First time you could mix English and Irish coins, second time the Punt, third time the Euro.
