Protective shelter contraption

Post by Trev62 »

Finally put the wheels on our first attempt at a protective shelter for our egg laying free ranging chickens.
The wooden frame was made out of the old lats we had replaced in the roof, old metal guttering also from the roof now tops and fully waterproofs the coop top as well as acting as a rest for the shelter. Three roofing sheets for the price of one after I complained about the length of time I was kept waiting for the Assistant to locate them at the a DIY store here and the wheels from a scrapped ride on mower that was left at the house when we brought it. So all in all apart from the time some Idiot spent working out how to put it altogether not a bad result!
We have put logs in side it for perches and so far the chickens have happily gone under it and used them when the wind and rain has arrived. We will probably throw some hay in it when the really cold weather arrives but we may may then have a problem with the rabbit moving in there!!
Only time will tell if it will prove effect or just fall to pieces!!!yike*

I think they'll really appreciate that, Trev. Wish we'd thought of it to keep ours free from wind during the worst of the weather - they can always hide under things, but the wind gets everywhere, so a full sided shelter is great.

First real test today with the wind and snow and it is still standing which is lucky as the chickens have been under it all day but one days survival does not make a full winters use!
Fingers crossed)t'
