Sort of recycling

Post by Spreckly »

Tomorrow, and the weather forecast for the east coast is grim, we are having replacement bay windows in our lounge and bedroom.yike*
The glass will be recycled, hence the title.
Scaffolders arrived on Saturday to put the framework up - they were supposed to come today!!
We have shifted furniture, some into the back bedroom, where we will be sleeping until we are set straight, some covered in dust sheets. Bits and pieces are all over the house, apart from bathroom, kitchen and hallway.
Not looking forward to the installation, or the aftermath. Our bedroom curtain rail was a beast to install, and not straightforward to take down this morning.
Don't care for upheavalsyike*

I think that counts as recycling, Spreckly - every little helps!
Hope you get straightened out again soon after all the disruption. By the way, nice timing:-D

Oh, Spreckly you have chosen a good time of year for this to be done, just like we did some years ago and it started to snow, so know how you feel.
This is definitely re-cycling by the way.
Make sure you have plenty of dust sheets down as in our experience the installers never bring enough with them.
Good luck.

Just wondered, how are you going to recycle the glass? Is it just the glass or the old frames as well? Are you going to make something out of it? Cloche for the garden, protection for plants, build a shed or summerhouse perhaps? I see these thrown in skips quite a lot, would be interested in learning what else you can do with them.

One window is in, despite the weather, but as the men didn't arrive until 10am, they have to do the front room one in the morning, and we had a meeting to attend. One of the men said I could leave them to ityike* No way, and the dog would have been very upset hearing footsteps in and out of the house.
They did put dust sheets down in the hall, the stairs, landing and our bedroom. We had sheeted all the furniture which we left in, so glad we did.
The finished window is beautiful, poor OH has now to work out how to attach the curtain rail, and our existing window sill. We shall get there, I have hoovered up, wiped skirting boards down, and chest tops, and we've taken odds and ends back in.
Ilona, the double glazing firm take the glass, that was part of the "deal".
We'll have to sleep in the spare bedroom again, the silicone smell is so strong, and I think they have got the keys for the windows!! I was still awake at 2.30 this morning, and up at six, so hope to sleep tonight. OH slept like a log.

My post has whooshed, but the bedroom bay is in, we've cleaned up, taken furniture back in, and hope to sleep on our bed tomorrow night.

Both windows now installed. They are beautiful. We won't be sleeping in our bedroom for some time, sadly, the smell of the glue and plastic is too strong, and OH would be coughing all night.
The firm is most persistent however. Just finishing my snack lunch, when the chap who brought the initial leaflets arrived. I managed to shake him off eventually, but not until he booked for a rep to visit at teatime to give us a "really good discounted quote" for two of our other windows. I have cancelled the visit. I was told how much warmer it would be with new windows, but told the chap that we would just have to up our heating.
What we have in is more than adequate. Apart from the pestering, we are pleased with what has been done.

Window glass is difficult to recycle, it's not the same as jars and bottles.
From Recycle Nation.
Bottle glass is one of the most recyclable items around. By contrast, in many communities, it is nearly impossible to recycle window glass. Why the disparity? Though the two products may seem virtually the same, there are actually some notable differences.

Ilona, that first link is American. While I'm sure they are right about bottles & window panes being different the actual recycling plant may not be the same here.
