Treating woodworm

Post by Spreckly »

I recently discovered that I have woodworm in some of the floorboards in my galley kitchen. My concern is that if I use a proprietry brand to treat this, I will be unable to keep my little dog away from the area for the forty eight hours advised on the tin.
I have read that vinegar and lemon juice may be used to treat this - has anyone any advice, please?
I had planned to paint the affected areas tonight, and cover the boards up during the daytime when Angel is around, but the distance between the sink and my worktop is less than a yard, so we will be walking over boards, which might cause an accident.

We have only used specialist woodworm treatment, Spreckly so really have no idea.
I will be interested in this thread though for future reference should it be needed.

Years ago we inherited some furniture that had woodworm, so smothered everything in Rentokill. All I remember about it was the nasty smell that lingered in the cupboards.

I've just had to clean out my food cupboards because of pantry moths. I was advised to use white vinegar because the acidity would kill the larvae - I guess that if it works on them it would work on woodworm, though it's too early to say whether it has or not.
I had a wee google for natural remedies for woodworm and they included white vinegar, borax and white spirit, as well as putting fly strips down to capture any emerging insects. Also primethrim? based products, which I think are the ones we used as a powder on the chickens for mites.

I used the white vinegar a couple of nights since. Last night I bit the bullet and applied woodworm killer liquid to the affected areas. I then used wooden bearers to support large wooden slabs.
This morning the areas treated were dry, so as I had had a brainwave last night, I removed a fireside rug, which was my Mother in law's pride and joy, and put it on the kitchen floor. It is too heavy for Angel to move. The tin said to keep off the treated area for forty eight hours, so the rug will be down until tomorrow night.

Yes, not to mention that it should be possible to barricade the entry to the room so that your dog can't enter it during the "exclusion time"!
