Lost Rosie this morning

Post by jackian »

Image
The last few days she has looked poorly doing the usual chickeny thing of hiding under a bush and not moving a lot so I was keeping a close eye on her ...but she rallied round and yesterday had a really good day (almost like a swan song )but this morning I found her in the coup just like asleep . Her eggs in the last few weeks had got very thin and I think it was a broken egg that did it .
We have had her just over two years and she was the smallest chicken I had ever seen although she was supposed to be 20 weeks at least and always was way behind the others in size .She was always thin ,always scraggy and had no feathers on her head at all ever ,even a bit off the top of her comb ! The other thing that was unusual was that she did not have a voice at all.If she tried to churp nothing came out .She always the bottom of the pecking order.When worms were dug up she was not interested and would wander off and eat the pellets while the others were not interested . She was always a follower and not a leader and was happy and content on her own ,sitting by my patio door watching my every move..
She was my favourite always as she was I think the runt of the litter and i always bat for the under dog . I was just pleased that during the night my two remaining girls did not touch her . I will miss her more than any of the others. I have lost chickens before but losing Rosie has really upset me .
We were planning to get two new girls in late march but now i think that needs to be brought forward as my two remaining lovely girls should not be on their own for too long .What do others think?
Does any one know of a reliable breeder in the High Wycombe area ?
4 lovely girls~~ Clover, the oldie and top chick Bonnie second in command .new girls Bluebell and Blossom.

Hi, Im really sorry to hear about Rosie but she went peacefully and with her friends and you cant really ask for more than that.{hug}
Probably a good idea to get more hens now while the days are shorter, I think it takes less time to introduce hens in the winter.

So sorry Jackie{hug} {hug}
I too would add some new ones sooner rather than later.
We got our first hens from Crofters farm just outside High Wycombe - they were lovely healthy chooks. It was some years ago now so not sure if it's still there...
Ah, just found their website and they have no hens until Feb/March - grrrr

We got our last two from there . They are just great and would recommend them..I was going there again in March but think I would like a couple before then as Rosie is the second I have lost in 6 weeks (different reasons and not crofters farm )
My garden looks empty already and Bonnie (from Crofters) has been crying all morning{cry}

I have had several hens who have been really sad when they have lost their sisters, I think with a smaller flock it shows more, hope you can soon get some more hens)t'

So sorry to hear that you have lost little Rosie. Until you keep chickens, you can't realise how upsetting it is when one goes. RIP little Rosie{hug}

Thank you for all your kind thoughts.
Losing Rosie was the saddest of any losses before and now down to two. Bonnie has been crying all morning so we need a plan .>eas2<
I have found a farm a few miles away in Windsor with Point-of-Lay and going with my friend Carol to inspect in the morning ...Watch this space .
