Thanks Karen. Batchick is a few months younger than the others who are noticeably moulting so maybe she isn't after all.
I just went out to check on her again as she came out of the coop briefly. I noticed she seemed to be holding her foot up- now Batchick has always had a bit of a funny walking style and I have never noticed anything wrong with her feet but I have just seen that the knuckle nearest the to the nail on her longest toe looks bigger than the one on her other foot. It doesn't look red an I can see no cuts or anything but it does seem to be bothering her. I ve just given her her last dose of anti inflammatory meds that the vet gave for her prolapse so that might make it feel a bit better. I could really do with avoiding more vets fees this week :( poor Batchick . My girls are on woodchip, is it possible she got a splinter? I've also heard of bumble foot but I thought that would be more of a black looking scab.

I was going to mention bumblefoot, I haven't seen it myself but yes apparently it shows as a black scab. maybe it's still small? You'll have to give her a close inspection if you think bumblefoot or a splinter. Scaly leg might be another possibility, although if it's localised to her knuckle then it may not be that. Again worth a look esp as scaly leg is catching (it s a mite) - check if her scales are raising up at all.
Or maybe she's just resting her foot, and one knuckle is a bit different to the other? Keep an eye on her for the next couple of days and see whether she's still favouring it or not.

Batchick has prolapsed again but this time the girls have for to her and pecked it so now it's bleeding. I ve separated her but it doesn't look good, it pops out immediately each time I put it back in and it's really bloody. I'm off to get some preparation h and I have some anti inflammatory meds left over from the last time but it looks so big and bloody I don't feel hopeful this time . Mrs Cakes had a prolapse last week and I just popped it back in no prob, I think hers was related to the softies she was laying because she is moulting. She has gone off lay now so I am not concerned that she will prolapse again. I don't know what has caused Batchick to prolapse again. There was an adverage size egg from her this morning, she laid a softie the other morning as I think she is doing a mini moult. They have oyster shell and extra calcium so not sure what else I can do. For now I will
Keep popping out and replacing her prolapse and see how she goes.

Midder - if she has prolapsed badly and it won't stay in maybe a trip to the vets might be needed if possible? The vet may be able to put a stitch in to keep it in place, she may also need antibiotics to help with any infection. Finally and most sadly, the vet will be able to put her to sleep if nothing can be done - but hopefully it won't come to that
Not sure why so many prolapses - just a thought but are they getting enough calcium? Apparently it's important for muscle movement as well as bones. Perhaps try a boost of limestone flour and see if that helps both with the softies (which are probably something to do with their moults if they are moulting) and with the prolapses.
Good wishes for Batchick and i hope she picks up soon{hug}

Have got a vet appointment for later this afternoon. It's not our normal chicken vet but was the soonest appointment I could get. I don't think it is looking good for Batchick and I am ever the optimist normally. The chicken vet said that her prolapse was bad before but this is much worse and it's bleeding. I managed to replace it a few times this morning but it's far too big now. She is in a cardboard box with some treats and seems settled enough. I just wish I had seen the prolapse before the other girls did then I could have just separated her and treated her as I did before.

Sadly, Batchick had to be put to sleep. In my heart I knew, she was in a bad way, the other chickens had managed to have a go at her before I got out there. The vet began talking about trying to stitch her up but he said she was so badly damaged it would not be the kindest thing. I had to agree. It's very sad, she was such a lovely girl with a fantastic little personality. She was bottom of the pecking order but crafty enough to get to the treats she wanted.
Rest in peace , dear little Batchick, thank you for my eggies. Xxx

Thank you hen pen and amber. My chicken troubles are not over, let the girls out this morning to find Mrs Kev Cakes has had a prolapse in the night. I have seperated her, she has not been pecked but I can't get it back in. Back to the vets today, I feel more hopeful for her.She has been laying softies for a week as she has been moulting but they have oyster shel and there is limestone powder sprinkled over their layers pellets. I'm feeling a bit unlucky, don't know what I can be dong wrong. All m girls are hybrids- are they more likely to prolapse because of the amount they lay? Maybe I have not sprinkled enough limestone flour on their food? I thought I had as sometimes the eggs have calcium deposits on them. Feeling a bit blue :(

Oh dear, you really do have all my sympathies. It really is awful when they are ill but when more than one has something, then you really start to question yourself. It's only natural to feel that way because we are responsible for the creatures in our care- but from what you have said, I reckon you are doing all the right things and it is just that you (and poor Batchick and Mrs Kev Cakes) have been very unlucky.

I'm so sorry to hear about Batchick and Mrs Kev Cakes as well. I agree with HenPen, it sounds like you're all having a spell of rotten luck rather than anything which you could be doing. I'm not sure there's much you can do to prevent prolapsing apart from getting those implant things to stop them laying eggs.
I think it's (bad) luck of the draw when it comes to whether they are prolapsing because they are hybrids or not. Some chickens will lay regularly and quit happily, others seem prone to softies and allsorts - I don't think there's any way of knowing. It's rotten for you and them but please don't blame yourself. You are having an awful run of bad luck - happens to us all.
Best of luck to Mrs Kev Cakes at the vets>fi<
