It was Hamble that showed Bella what to do...

Chicken in a pot! One on each side of your door would be much prettier than most planters. What gorgeous feathers they have.

They are very unusual tulips. Can you get me a few of those bulbs please??
Hamble has obviously found her vocation. A teacher of mischief. She'd fit in well with the other henpals, if she ever fancied posting on their diary

Re: The Dinosaurs in my Back Garden
Two months after darling Florence died and new girl Bella was introduced to the flock things have finally started settling. Bella is bottom of the pecking order but is mostly acting as part of the flock and not hiding from the other two. Before Florence died she was definitely top of the pecking order with Matilda second and Hamble bottom. With Florence gone top spot became vacant. I'm really not sure who is filling that role. Hamble, previously bottom, is the worst at beating up newbie Bella. Matilda is assertive and will put Bella in her place but isn't as bad as Hamble. Hamble and Matilda seem equals. Neither pecks the other. Both are as comfortable leading the others around. Is it unusual not to have a top hen in a small flock of three?
Re: The Dinosaurs in my Back Garden
I always find the bottom hen will fight savagely to raise herself up a notch when a new hen comes along. Even when you think they are sweet natured & gentle! My money's on Matilda being new (secret) top hen.

Re: The Dinosaurs in my Back Garden
Yes I would say Matilda as well. It's unusual for a (former) bottom hen to rise to top without a big fight. You can probably tell who is top hen if you give out treats - when they are getting scarce, the top hen will warn off the others until they have had enough, so if Matilda is giving any looks and the others are steering out of her way then you'll know.
My top hen Dory has perfected The Look now and that's all she needs to assert her authority.
Glad to hear things have setled down and Bella is an accepted member of the flock. If Hamble is still being naughty, a quick squirt with a water pistol should do it. Also a raised voice and a telling off can sometimes be enough!

Re: The Dinosaurs in my Back Garden
Think you guys could be right about Matilda although if she is top girl she is doing so with stealth
Matilda is half the size of the other two but a confident little girl.

Size does not mean much it is the air of which they carry it.
