boodles garden diary

Post by mrs boodles »

Well I started a diary on here last year but it fizzled out as events took over life to a great extent. Want to have a go again this year, for relaxation and exercise and for veggies to eat. I only have a pocket size , and I mean pocket size garden but I am sure I could use it more productively. I got out some pictures from a few years ago and it looked so neat and tidy, now it has got out of hand again and I need to get on top of it bit by bit while I can. Too wet to do anything but plan and look at seed catalogues.

Well, never grew anything 2014, but 2015 is a new year and although my circumstances are so different now to what they were a year ago I am determined to make a go of my new veggie garden.
So very much hoping Richard that you are going to have garden diaries as a topic again for 2015.

Well, here we are, a week and a bit into 2015. I am getting quite excited at the prospect of having a good size veggie garden again after my tiny little pocket size garden in Sussex. I look out the kitchen window and see the new patch to be and know its going to be darn hard work but good too.
Its covered with weed suppressant at the moment but a friend of Natalies is going to rotivate it and then we will start getting some order into it.
Have ordered seeds and hope to be growing, runner beans, climbing beans, beetroot, carrots marrow, courgettes, couple of types of squashes, leeks, peppers, chillies, tomatoes, tomatillo, usual salad stuff and some cucamelon. Also changed my mind about potatoes and bought some pentland javelin and will try and do some onions.
Have warned Natalie that windowsills will be overrun with seed trays etc later on.

Sounds very exciting, I will be watching to see how it goes, and no doubt having inspiration ... Good luck with the windowsill starting - it's so good to see them poke up above the soil isn't it?)like( x

My daughter Natalie has started to dig the veggie garden for me and have what will be one bed already, not sure what will put in it. Have got potatoes chitting and some onion sets but want to really put them at the bottom in long rows so thinking maybe runner beans in this new bed. Have got a lot of well rotted chicken manure to put in.
Might put a mini greenhouse up in house as well as window sills, will be a bit warmer for seeds but still see seed trays and pots being everywhere. good job Natalie loves her old mum cos its her house.
Still need to get salad seeds. Can`t wait for it to get a bit warmer so can get going.

Well, I have the mini greenhouse up in my room (room looking very crowded as small). I have aubergines, leeks, tomatoes and couple of chillies germinated BUT think I might have to re sow tomatoes and aubergines again as very leggy. Any advice on how to stop that would be appreciated. Veggie patch coming on slowly, Natalie been very busy so not able to dig any more for me, hope if weather fine we can both get out there tomorrow on her day off.
Bought some raspberry canes day before yesterday, going to get a big container and grow them in that. They are autumn fruiting and have done them before. We also bought some cheap herbs for the summer and put them in. I would have liked a dedicated herb bed but Natalie has spread them out in front garden.
Hopefully spring is on the way as want to spend more time out in garden but have to be careful with weather and my duff lungs.yike*

Hi mrs boodles - leggy growth is usually the result of warmth encouraging growth but not enough light (imagine a forest floor where seedlings try to grow tall quickly to reach light) The trick is once seeds have germinated (the initial heat to start growth) they can be moved somewhere cooler (but not cold - not below 12-15oC if you can help it) but where they can get maximum light such as a south facing windowsill.

Moved the mini greenhouse in sitting room to somewhere where seedlings get better light. Tomato seedlings are leggy but have true leaves coming through on them so hoping for best.
Put the raspberry canes into the tubs yesterday so hoping they will be ok. Need to get some salad staple seeds, (radish beetroot and string onion).
Only two beds left for Natalie to dig but weather not so good at moment and she is working hard. Trying to sort out imageshack so can put up some photos.
Can`t believe I used to have allotments as have forgotten so much, crazy.

Had a good productive morning, sown trays of beetroot and cucamelon and pots of squash and courgette. Also put onions in module trays to set to sprout. Repotted leggy tomato plants and they seem happy enough. Put three wigwams of canes up for beans, need to get more canes. Did have loads in Sussex but they got thrown so its all a bit of a new start.
Must sort out wood for edging the beds later this week or next.
Still loads to do but cracking on with this fine couple of days slowly and surely.
