Yellowhammers in the Garden

Europe's smallest Bird, a real beauty

Yellowhammers are a beautiful bird and welcomed in anyone's Garden. Regrettably they are on the RSPB Red Status List and much of this has to be down to the changing of Agricultural Land to larger fields, less hedge and new Housing Developments which offer little or no habitat for them. Basically six feet high paneled fencing!.

Yellowhammer in Hedgerow

Yellowhammers are resident in the UK, exceptions being higher ground and north-west Scotland.

They feed on Seeds and Insects often found in thick bush or hedgerow.

Their nests are made of moss and grass, start breeding in late April with Incubation taking around 11 - 14 days.

The above photo was taken in the hedgerow of my back garden which sides on to a field
