Frugal, thrifty and alternative uses for
Bicarbonate of Soda (Baking Soda)

One of the most versatile products in your Cupboard

Looking around, you can buy a 1kg. bag of Bicarbonate of Soda for around £2.50 and you have to say that for the uses it has, it is money well spent indeed!


1. To clean an Oven Put some on a damp cloth and wipe all around the Ove. Leave overnight and rinse off in morning.

2. Washing Up . Add some Bicarbonate of Soda to your washing up bowl (maybe with some Lemon) for a clean hygenic wash.

3. On Rugs and Carpets it has both deodurizinf and cleaning properties and can relieve you of pet aromas plus clean at the same time.

4. Dandruff Control . Wet your hair and rub some bicarbonate of soda well into the scalp (do not add shampoo). After a few weeks your scalp will both look and feel better.

5. Gargle and Mouthwash . Putting it straight - bad breath! Not necessarily from bad health but from a very garlic or curry centred meal. Put two spoonfuls of Soda into a glass of water and gargle. For a mouth wash to relieve Ulcers etc., use the same method

6. Clearing a blocked drain . Mix 200g of soda with 200ml hot white vinegar and pour down the sink plug hole. The two combined will fizz well. After a few minutes pour a kettle of boiling water down. If it's really bad carry out procedure before you go to bed but leave the kettl;e until the morning.

7. Clean a Shower Head . Place shower head in a bowl containing 50g soda and 200g vinegar. Leave for one hour, replace shower head and turn water on - gives a shine as well!

8. Laundry Add about ½ a cup of soda to a normal wash load. This will assist in removing stains.

9. Tea & Coffee Cup Stains . Make up a paste with soda and water, then rub into the cups and it will remove all those nasty stain marks

10. Formica type Kitchen Work Tops . Wash using a mixture of Soda and water to get rid of those stains and other marks which build up over time
