Frugal, thrifty and alternative uses for
Plastic Bottles

Using products & items around the home for other jobs

If there's one thing we get a load of through the year, it's plastic bottles, sports drinks, natural water, squashes, vegetable oil etc. they all add up to a mountain of waste in many cases. I read somewhere that someone had made a Greenhouse out of them, maybe a bit excessive for some, but ten out of ten for recycling waste products! Here's some uses.......

1. Storage

Simple really, but there are many things we can store in them from Sugar to nuts and bolts.

2. Paint

Fed up with finding you haven't sealed that paint tin 100%, the air's got to it and you either have spoilt paint or got to get the Pliers and peel off the top two inches because it's formed a skin? Plastic Bottle are idea for this, simply pout your left over paint in, screw the top on and it's job done!

3. Bird Feeders

With a bit of DIY and Artistic Licence, plastic bottles can easily be converted into bird feeders even if it's just cutting the bottom off and screwing to a wall.

4. Making a Funnel

Having a funnel for Petrol or anything else isn't always seen as a necessity, but at some stage you're going to wish you had one. Fine a larger bottle with a smallish top, cut in half and pour the liquid through it.

5. Watering Can

Empty Milk Cartons are good for this, especially the 4 Litre size. Make a hole in the lid / top to a suitable diameter and make the small watering jobs a lot easier.

6. Cistern Water Saver

If you have the old type of Cistern which flushes more water than necessary, fill a smaller bottle and place it in the Cistern. This will ensure the cistern fills less water and if you have a Meter, saves you money as well!

7.Plant Protectors

To protect your young flowers or vegetables, cut a bottle forming an open ended tube and place in the soil around your plant. This will also act as a protector against wind and have a slight mini-greenhouse effect as well.

8. Weed killer helper

If you have a persistent weed problem amongst your flowers or vegetables, cut a plastic bottle to form a tube, embed it into the ground around the weed and apply the weed killer thus avoiding killing off the other plants as well.

9. Kids Water Gun

Rather than spend a fortune on one of those water sprays which last five minutes and end up stuffed untidily beside the Shed for two years, just give them an empty washing up container, pierce a hole in the lid and let them get on with it!

10. Cake Shaping

By cutting the shaped tops off Plastic Bottles you can make your own Cake / Biscuit Cutter when preparing for the Oven!

Warning - If using any Container for something else, make sure it is labelled

Before throwing away, "What can I use this for"
