Frugal, thrifty and alternative uses for
SALT

Using products & items around the home for other jobs

I was quite surprised researching the uses for Salt, here's just some of them!

Salt for cleaning purposes

Brass and Copper

Mix together equal amounts of Salt, Vinegar and Flour into a paste and smear over. Leave for a short and wash off with soapy water, then shine.

Rugs and Carpets

To remove greasy stains from a rug or carpet, mixing a bit of salt with White Spirit (meths is better though)and rub over the greasy stain.

Washing up Liquid substitute

If you run out of Washing Up Liquid, just sprinkle some salt in the dish water and it will clean just as effectively. Rinse well though and cream your hands after use.

Burnt food in Pans

Put some salt in the Pan, add some hot water, leave for a few minutes then clean.

Some other uses for Salt

Deodorising Trainers

To help elevate those horrible odours (usually with Teenage Boys and Blokes!!!), sprinkling some Salt in them overnight will absorb quite a bit.

Restoring Bread and Cutting Boards

After washing your board in the normal manner, wipe with a damp cloth with Salt on it. This will soften it up and restore some of the lost colour.

Keep new Towels looking good

For the first few times of washing a new Towel, add 150g of Salt to the wash. Doing this will help seal the colours.

Mouthwash

Salt is a long time used way to keep breath fresh and sterilize the Mouth. Gargling with salt will help rid yourself of Ulcers, help in healing after a Dentists trip and generally clear your mouth of unwanted odours.

In the Bath

Rather than using Bath Salts, add a couple of spoonfuls of Salt which will soften the Water and your Skin as well.

Before you go to bed and there's still a glow in the Hearth, , douse out any flames with salt. This will not only put the fire out quicker but the soot will be easier to sweep up the following morning
